Biden Administration Announces New Sanctions Against Iran

Joe Biden

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan announced on Tuesday that new sanctions will be imposed on Iran following the recent attacks on Israel. The decision comes amidst criticism from Republicans who claim that the Biden administration has not been tough enough on Iran. The White House had previously extended a waiver allowing Iran access to $10 billion in escrowed funds in November 2023.

Sullivan stated that President Biden is working with allies, partners, and bipartisan leaders in Congress to formulate a comprehensive response. The upcoming sanctions will target Iran's missile and drone program, as well as entities supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran's Defense Ministry.

The U.S. plans to enhance air and missile defense systems in the Middle East to counter Iran's military capabilities effectively. Over the past three years, the U.S. has sanctioned over 600 individuals and entities linked to terrorism, human rights abuses, and support for proxy terrorist groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and others.

The Biden administration has faced criticism for its handling of Iran, including the waiver extension and sanctions relief provided as part of a prisoner swap deal. However, officials have clarified that the unfrozen funds were designated for humanitarian assistance and not directly accessible to the Iranian regime.

Despite the backlash, the U.S. remains committed to holding Iran accountable for its destabilizing actions. The administration vows to continue applying pressure in coordination with global partners and Congress to address Iran's problematic behaviors.
