Bid to turn Sunderland city centre office into new cafe

A new cafe could soon open in Sunniside under proposals being considered by council planners.

This month, a planning application was validated for office space at 27-28 Norfolk Street in Sunderland city centre.

If approved, the ground floor units will be converted into a cafe alongside alterations to the shop front.

According to planning documents submitted to Sunderland City Council, the cafe would create three full-time and two part-time jobs.

Developers state the plans would fit into wider leisure offer in the area including bars, restaurants, cinema and bowling facilities.

Works on the building also include installing two new windows to the west elevation and internal works.

A design and access statement, prepared by Sunderland-based firm Fitz Architects, provides extra details on the scheme.

The report reads: “The design brief is to convert an existing building currently used as office space into a café which will improve and bring business to the area.

“The design has been thoroughly thought out to serve the public and potential customers.”

It goes on to say: “These minor alterations to the existing building will create a much healthier and more comfortable space for customers of the proposed café to enjoy whilst incorporating a more aesthetically pleasing and presentable exterior.

“The impact of the proposals is minimal therefore it will be the local authority’s responsibility to support the sympathetic design solution this scheme presents.”

Sunderland City Council are expected to rule on the application by early April following public consultation.

Comments on the plan can be made by writing to the council before Wednesday, March 4.
