Bid to set up new charity for Palnackie area hits temporary delay

A new charity to boost Palnackie and district has been temporarily delayed.

It had been hoped that Buittle Quest would be up and running by now.

But a backlog at Scotland’s charities regulator OSCR has held up the registration process.

The watchdog aims to process applications for charitable status within 90 days.

Buittle Quest submitted their bid to OSCR last October.

Inaugural trustee Bob Shipway said: “We’ve had over 30 expressions of interest for ordinary membership and six for associate membership but we can’t formally process this interest until our application is approved by OSCR.”

Once Buittle Quest is up and running regenerating Palnackie port and Palnackie Village Hall will be top priority.

A pontoon scheme to provide canoes and yachts on the River Urr with mooring facilities is already planned.

Mr Shipway said: “On a broader level I’m really pleased that Scotland has so many organisations seeking to become a charity and do good in their catchment area.

“However, this has caused the backlog and we are beginning to miss funding opportunities whilst we wait for approval.”

An OSCR spokesperson said: “We have made a preliminary assessment of the application but need additional information in order to proceed with it.

“We are writing to the applicant to ask for this information.

“Some registration applications can take longer to process than 90 days.

“We have allocated further resources to this area of our work to help us get through an increase in applications for registration.”
