Bid to get Big Ben bonging for Brexit bombs

It probably seemed like a great idea at the time - a number of crowdfunding bids began to get Britons to chip in so Big Ben can chime for Brexit on January 31.

But they've not exactly got off to a flying start.

The clock has been silenced since 2017 for the safety of workers who were undertaking a four-year restoration of Elizabeth Tower.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson previously suggested members of the public could foot the £500,000 cost of the bell ringing out at 11pm on the day Brexit happens.

Brexiteers demanded the scheme be paused so the bell can ring out to signal the historic moment that Britain leaves the European Union.

But the few campaigns have raised around £551 so far - a fraction of the £500,000 target.

Some of the pages have failed to attract a single bid.

Despite the subdued response, Conservative MP Mark Francois - a leading Brexiteer, predicts the target will be reached within days.

"I think we will get it within 48 hours," he rather optimistically told ITV's Good Morning Britain on Wednesday.

"It seems to me and many of my colleagues in the House of Commons patently daft that we have got the most iconic clock in the world - literally it's a world heritage site - that that should stay silent on this occasion."

Brexiteers' calls for church bells to peal out across the nation to mark Brexit Day have received a similarly muted response.

The Central Council of Church Bell Ringers said bells should not be rung for political reasons.
