Bid to fly European flag outside city chambers 'every day until Edinburgh rejoins EU'

A councillor wants to fly a European flag outside the the city chambers "every day until Edinburgh is part of the EU again."

Scottish Green councillor Alex Staniforth has submitted a motion on "flying the EU flag" to Thursday's meeting of Edinburgh city council.

It notes the city's strong support for staying in the EU during the Brexit referendum, with 74.4% voting to remain.

Cllr Staniforth is proposing to fly the Council of Europe's flag outside the city chambers. This is an international organisation separate from the EU which the UK is still a member of.

Its flag is the same as the EU's - twelve yellow stars on a blue field.

The motion says: "That to mark our city’s strong wish to remain in the EU the Council of Europe flag should be flown from the city chambers every day until Edinburgh is part of the EU again.

"With the exception of days on which flying a flag to mark or commemorate a specific day of celebration, remembrance etc. makes that impossible."

Not all pro-remain councillors seem to be behind the idea.

Scottish Labour's Scott Arthur tweeted: "This is where nationalism has taken Scotland - next week Edinburgh will have it's very own flag debate.

"As a passionate remainer, it's the values of the EU I want to maintain not the symbolism. Surely there are more important things we can discuss on Scot Gov budget day!?"

Last week, MSPs voted to continue flying the Scottish flag outside the Scottish Parliament.
