Bid to find man caught on CCTV after 'horrific' attempted murder

A CCTV image was today released of a man detectives want to trace as part of a probe into an "horrific" attempted murder which saw the victim battered around the head with a weapon.

Police were called to Old Liverpool Road in Warrington at around 11.15am today, March 21, to reports a man had been assaulted with a weapon.

The victim, a 35-year-old man from Widnes, suffered serious injuries to his head during the attack - although he has since left hospital, police said today.

But now police have turned to the public and released a CCTV image of man who appears to be in dialogue, who they want to speak to in connection with the violent attack.

Detectives are urging anyone who believes they may know the identity of the man, believed to be Scottish, to get in touch.

Detective Sergeant John Rhodes, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was a horrific assault which took place in the middle of the street during a busy time of day.

“The victim received hospital treatment for serious injuries to his head caused by a weapon and has now been released from hospital.

“As part of our ongoing enquiries I am looking to trace the man in the CCTV image who I believe has a Scottish accent."

He added: "If you think you recognise him or know who he is please get in touch with us. I would also appeal directly to the man in the image to contact police.”

A 42-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder has been released with no further action.
