Bid to assess kids' learning level

BHUBANESWAR: The state government has decided to assess the learning abilities of students after physical classes resumed for children of VI and VII after a gap of 19 months.

The baseline assessment tests for Odia, English and mathematics will be held from November 22 to 24. The baseline assessment of the student shall be made by the subject teachers which will help them identify the learning level and learning loss of every child. Accordingly, the teachers can design the instructional strategies to ensure each child's learning progress, the notice from the school and mass education department said. The question papers in Odia, English and mathematics have been set by the director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).

"Unlike other states where remedial classes are being conducted after reopening of the schools, we have decided to take the test first and plan accordingly. For example, a class VI student will answer questions from chapters of classes IV and V, so that a teacher can assess the standard of the student," said Tapas Kumar Nayak, assistant director, SCERT.

The SCERT suggested teachers to ask students to practise worksheets of previous classes to make them comfortable with physical teaching, Nayak added.
