A floating cycleway could be coming to Trafford .
Trafford Council has submitted a bid for funding to Transport for Greater Manchester for a suspended cycling and walking roundabout which would link Chorlton , Stretford and Salford Quays .
The elevated roundabout would sit above the busy White City interchange in Stretford and would be the first of its kind in the UK.
The Dutch design is known as a Hovenring and aims to reduce journey times for cyclists while keeping them and pedestrians away from traffic.
The interchange would link Trafford's Stretford Cycleway, which opened last month , with Salford's pending Trafford Road cycle scheme.
The move has been praised by cyclists online.
Twitter user NorthernSoul03 said: "This is great news! I cycle round White City to get to work and home and it’s a nightmare for cyclists and pedestrians."
Another, HarryGray, added: "This junction needs this so badly."
A spokesperson for Trafford Council confirmed the authority couldn't release some information about the project at this stage, but confirm the bid has been submitted.
The spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a bid has gone in to TFGM to develop and fund an elevated cycleway. The bid is at an early stage and will require full approval from Trafford Council and extensive consultation, if funding is secured.
"The scheme would involve linking cycle paths across Chorlton, Stretford and Trafford Park to give cyclists more safety on the roads.
"Health and wellbeing is a major priority to Trafford Council and as a result we are totally committed to improving cycling routes across the borough by working collaboratively with TFGM and other partners.”
