Bid made to turn Kirkcudbright's old court house into house and artists' studio

A new attempt is being made to redevelop Kirkcudbright’s old court house.

A bid for change of use to a house and artists’ studio has been lodged with the council.

Documents show that the old court room would be turned into a work space for the studio with the existing benches and pews removed.

The tower and cells do not form part of the plans and neither does the area that used to house the town’s library.

The design access statement for applicants Aspire Ltd describes the proposal as “an excellent opportunity for the future use and safeguarding of an important and key listed building”. It has been empty since the town’s sheriff court shut in late 2013.

It was bought by Oliver Ansbro – who runs Castle Douglas property firm Redstone Estate Ltd – in 2016. He intended developing flats and office space in the building before he put it back up for sale last year.
