Bid launched to install water tap in Kilmarnock town centre

A tap for shoppers to fill their water bottles could be installed in Kilmarnock town centre.

Aimed at reducing single-use plastics, the Scottish Water top-up tap would be based at the Cross.

If approved, the round stainless-steel structure should take three to five days to install in the town.

It’s proposed that it would be stationed near to CeX, outside the Burns Mall.

Scottish Water has already received permission from councils in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Ayr to install the taps – with some already in place.

Scottish Water’s proposal reads: “Scottish Water have committed to install outdoor water bottle filling stations across Scotland to encourage and promote the use of refillable bottles which customers can fill up with one of the country’s best-loved products – our nation’s tap water.

“The benefits of topping up with fresh, great tasting tap water are clear – it’s good value and good for the pocket, it’s good for the environment and it’s good for health.

“We would now like to invite East Ayrshire Council to be in the next provision to complement the existing taps we have in Scotland’s central belt.

“We want to serve our customers and patrons of Kilmarnock, namely walkers, shoppers, commuters and tourists who visit Kilmarnock town centre and utilise the local amenities.”

The council will rule on the application in the near future.
