Two teenagers were shot — one of them fatally — Monday in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.
They were standing on a sidewalk in the 700 block of North Lawndale Avenue about 5:40 p.m. when someone rode up on a bicycle and fired shots, Chicago police said.
Markel Smith, 18, was struck in the head and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died about 4 a.m. the next day, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He lived in the Lawndale neighborhood.
The other teen, 15 years old, was shot in the hand, police said. His condition had stabilized at the same hospital.
The shooter fled south on Lawndale, police said. Area North detectives are investigating.
