A 78-year-old bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle Friday afternoon in Jefferson Park on the Northwest Side.
He was biking “erratically in circles” in the 6200 block of West Higgins Avenue about 1:10 p.m. when he rode head on into a moving Nissan Pathfinder in the oncoming lane, Chicago police said in a statement.
Czeslaw Kosman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Autopsy results released Saturday revealed Kosman died of craniocerebral injuries from being hit by a vehicle, the medical examiner’s office said. His death was ruled accidental.
Kosman lived a few blocks away from the site of the crash in Jefferson Park, according to the medical examiner’s office.
The Nissan’s driver, a 39-year-old woman, was cited for failure to reduce speed and no proof of insurance, police said.
At least five other bicyclists have been fatally struck by vehicles in Chicago this year, including a 13-year-old boy struck by a hit-and-run driver on the Southwest Side in June.
