'Biblical' floods in Malahide cause local Avoca to close in dramatic end to recent good weather

Heavy rain in Malahide has caused huge flooding on busy roads this afternoon, forcing one popular store to close.

One local described the thundery showers as "biblical" as Dubliners got grips with the dramatic end to the recent heatwave.

Enjoy Malahide, a volunteer run community initiative urged locals to stay safe after sudden flooding disrupted traffic.

They said: "Crazy rain in Malahide earlier this afternoon.

"Hope everyone is ok after the resulting sudden flooding."

Avoca in Malahide has closed for the day as a result of the weather event.

Malahide Castle and Gardens said: " Please note due to flash floods in Malahide this morning @avocamalahide will close for the remainder of today.

"Malahide Castle and Visitor Centre are unaffected and will remain open. ,

"Apologies for any inconvenience. We will keep you posted!"

One North Dublin resident said that the flash flooding was a result of "monsoon-type rain".

Another local shared a video of the shocking flooding in Malahide Castle.

Met Eireann has issued an advisory for heavy thundery showers for the whole of Ireland for the next few days as an ominous change hits the country.

A cold front spread across Ireland yesterday bringing heavy and possibly thundery showers which lead to hazardous driving conditions and spot flooding.

The areas especially at risk are Leinster with thunderstorms becoming widespread again during Wednesday before a strange weekend.

The forecaster said: "Early indications suggest the weekend will be fresh and bright with a northwesterly air-flow dominating bringing a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers. Temperatures close to or slightly below the seasonal average."
