Bhopal: Raped by cop and 2 others in rented room in Kamla Nagar, says 23-year-old

BHOPAL: A 23-year-old woman approached Kamla Nagar police on Friday and lodged a complaint of rape against a constable posted with the district reserve police lines in Bhopal. She alleged that his two accomplices, who are presumed to be policemen, also raped her.

Investigation officer Inspector Akanksha Sharma said that the woman alleged in her complaint that she was in a relationship with the prime accused, who hails from Sagar.

She said she is preparing for competitive exams but worked in a government department in Bhopal on contractual basis earlier. According to her complaint, she met the accused while she was on duty. In May she quit the job and her family members approached the constable's family for their marriage but they refused.

She alleges that when the constable went to Sagar in May, he approached her and raped her. She says she had filed a complaint against him with senior police officers after which he assured that he would marry her. He even took her to his home and they stayed together for seven days, she says, alleging that he assaulted her during this period.

Inspector Sharma said that the woman alleged that he called her to Bhopal two days back on August 3, and took her to his rented room in Kamla Nagar where he again raped her. On Friday morning, around 3.30am, the cop went out and told her to keep the door open as his roommates may come, she says.

She did so but when she was sleeping in his room, one of his roommates overpowered her and raped her, she alleges. After he left, another accomplice of the cop entered the raped her, she says in her complaint.

When the accused constable returned around 2pm, she narrated the incident to him but instead of helping her, he allegedly assaulted her. The woman called Dial-100 after which Kamla Nagar police reached the spot and took her to police station where her complaint was taken and a rape case registered against the three men.

Inspector Sharma said that when police checked the CCTV footage on Saturday morning, they found that the woman had gone to the accused cop's room on Friday afternoon. Neighbours too told police that they had not seen the woman in the area before Friday afternoon.

The woman has refused a medical examination after registration of the case. Police are investigating the case from all angles and if the facts and evidence reveal that she filed a false complaint, a case may be registered against her, said an officer. Further investigations were on in the case.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
