BHOPAL: An online fraudster, posing himself as an Army soldier, allegedly duped a Shahpura legal advisor of Rs 96,000 on the pretext of taking his house on rent and paying advance rent.
The victim -had posted an advertisement on a website to rent his hoome. The victim reported the matter to the cyber-crime branch from where the complaint was forwarded to Shahpura police station on Thursday.
Investigation officer SI Rohit Nagar said that complainant Pankaj Singh Thakur, 42, a resident of Shantikunj in Bharat Nagar of Shahpura, is posted as legal advisor in a private company in Mandideep. He stated in his complaint to police that he had posted an advertisement on a real estate website to rent out his flat.
He stated that on October 3, he received a call from an unidentified number on which the caller posed himself as an Army solider. The accused desired to take his house on rent. When Thakur agreed, the accused offered to pay rent in advance.
He sent Rs 1 to Thakur through an online payment wallet. When Thakur received the money and started trusting him, the accused sent him a QR Code through which Rs 95997 were deducted from his account in two transactions. Subsequently, the accused switched off his phone. Realising that he was cheated, Thakur filed a complaint with the cyber-crime branch which was forwarded to Shahpura police station.
