Bhopal: Metro work in slow lane adds to traffic chaos near Jinsi

BHOPAL: A number of hazard prone (accident spots) or blind spots have emerged on the stretch of road from Ganesh Mandir tri-section in Arera Colony to Jinsi square where the traffic has been in a complete mess due to construction of the metro project and a flyover on the route for over two years. Apart from these two development projects, another construction agency has started laying a gas pipeline in the area while the roads are also dug up for other projects like the sewer lines.

Police including the traffic police admitted that many blind spots have developed in the area but no fatal accidents were reported as the volume of traffic remains very high and the vehicles move at slow speed.

SHO MP Nagar Sudhir Arjaria said that the left turn on the stretch of the road at Board Office Square in front of a mall has turned a blind spot due to the ongoing construction works. The spot has been covered with iron sheets and there is always a possibility of a road accident as the commuters coming from Link Road side and the mall side tend to take short cuts.

He said that another such spot has developed at Pragati petrol pump square which is a blind spot and the volume of traffic at the square is very high. The spot at Gurudev Gupt Square rotary has also become a hazard prone zone. Any small mistake by any commuter can result in a road accident. Especially the vehicles going from MP Nagar police station side towards Jyoti Talkies Square and the traffic coming from Maida Mill side. Accidents can take place if any vehicle driver makes a small mistake.

He said that the rotary near MP Nagar police station is very complex. People take shortcuts to avoid U-Turns and in case of any negligence accidents can happen at the spot. The diversion at Maida Mill Road on the Press Complex Road has also developed as a blind spot as the commuters have to take diversion. Many times shopkeepers put up flex boards at the diversions which may turn into blind spots for commuters. Police take action against such people. People are advised to drive safely for their own safety.

DCP (Traffic) Hansraj Singh admitted that many blind spots have developed on the stretch of road from Ganesh Mandir till Jinsi. Major blind spots can be named as near Mansarovar Complex, Pragati Petrol pump square, and at the starting of Subhash Nagar overbridge. The situation has improved at Board Office Square as the left turns have been opened. But no major fatal accidents take place because the volume of traffic is high and the vehicle speed is slow due to congestion. Minor accidents like vehicles hitting the dividers have taken place but there were no casualties or injuries.

He said that the diversions cannot be removed as the construction works are going on. But the traffic police cops remain deployed during peak hours at major points to maintain the traffic arrangements.
