Bhopal: Joyride in wee hours with friends turns fatal, engineering student dies in sports-bike crash

BHOPAL: A speeding sports-bike borne three helmetless students lost control and skidded with their bike for around 30 feet and rammed into the rotary at Mata Mandir Square in Bhopal in the wee hours of Friday morning. A 20-year-old youth, who was riding the bike, died while one of his friends sustained severe injuries and was undergoing treatment in critical condition.

TT Nagar police have registered a case and investigations have been started.

When police checked the footage of CCTV cameras fitted at the spot, they found that the deceased, who was riding the bike, applied the front disk brake without any reason at high speed on the empty road and the bike skidded on the road. The third friend escaped with minor injuries.

Investigation officer ASI Dinesh Khajuria said that the deceased Kanha Chouhan, 20, hailed from Sidhi district and was a student of BE first year at a private engineering college. His father is a farmer and he has two siblings including a younger brother and a sister.

ASI Khajuria said that Kanha's friend Vishwanath Pratap Singh Chouhan, 20, hails from Sidhi district, and here he was residing at Kanta Shravan Colony in Ayodhya Nagar. He is a student of DCA and also works in a private firm in Govindpura.

He told police that on Friday early morning around 3.30am, he along with Kanha and their common friend Mayank Dubey, who is also an engineering student, went out on a joyride to have tea by Kanha's sports bike. Kanha was riding the bike while Vishwanath and Mayank were riding pillion. Around 3.45am when they were going from Platinum Plaza towards MANIT, Kanha suddenly applied front disk brakes and the bike skidded on the road.

Kanha and Mayank skidded on the road for around 30 feet along with their bike and crashed into the Mata Mandir Square rotary. Both Kanha and Mayank sustained severe head injuries and fell unconscious. Vishwanath was thrown on the road and he escaped with minor injuries. He took out Mayank's mobile phone and called his friend Shubham Shukla, who is a student at MANIT about the incident. A local called police on Dial-100 after which police reached the spot and rushed the injured to hospital. Kanha died while undergoing treatment at the hospital around 24 hours later early on Saturday morning while Mayank was still undergoing treatment in critical condition.

ASI Khajuria said that both Kanha and Mayank sustained severe head injuries. Had they been wearing helmets they would have survived the accident. Police have registered a case and investigations were on.
