76% students 'fail' exams at Bhopal school

BHOPAL: As many as 102 of 134 students of Vindhyachal Academy School in Bhopal have failed in maths or English in the CBSE class 10 and 12 term-1 results, leaving them shell-shocked and parents furious.

What makes the 76% failure rate stranger is that some of these students have got full marks in other subjects.

School principal A Cecilia fears a "major goof-up" at the evaluation centre and has written to CBSE for remedial measures. The term-1 exam was MCQ-based. Officials say 73 Class 10 students took the exam and 61 of them (83.5%) were declared failed in mathematics and English. In class 12, 41 of the 61 students failed in English.

After the report cards were released, parents gathered at the school gates on Wednesday and protested. "My daughter has got full marks in all subjects except mathematics and science, where she has been given single-digit marks. She has been a topper. We are shocked," said retired Armyman Kanta Kumar Yadav.

He alleged that the school management is hiding a lot of things from parents. "Why isn't the school coming out with a proper response to parents if it hasn't made any mistake? The school should make things clear to parents. Children's academic career is at stake," Yadav said. Parents urged CBSE to intervene. "We went to CBSE, but they said they can take it up only if school approaches them. We told the school to follow protocol. The school authorities say they are in touch with CBSE on this. We will not sit quiet as there has been a major goof-up in evaluation," said Prerna Badegaonkar, whose son is in class 10.

School principal A Cecilia said the school has contacted CBSE to resolve the issue. "Why would any school want to have such results? I think a major goof-up took place at the exam centre. Our exam centre was at Rajiv Gandhi School. They did the evaluation. I have tried to contact them but they were not ready to listen to us," said Cecilia.

"CBSE authorities have assured us that the issue will be resolved soon. I request parents to have faith in us. We are trying our best to resolve the issue," she added.
