Bhiwandi civic body may grant nods for Eid slaughter: Bombay HC

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday allowed the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC) to grant permissions for temporary places for slaughter for Bakri Eid on July 10.

Justice Anil Menon and Justice Makarand Karnik passed the direction on a public interest litigation (PIL) by an NGO, Jiv Maitri Trust, alleging violation of earlier high court orders.

Last year the high court had restrained the BNMC, which does not have a licensed abattoir, from granting permissions without a nod from it.

On Monday, the high court directed that a senior officer remain present.

BNMC advocate Narayan Bubna said it has adopted a policy for slaughter in line with the BMC. It will take necessary precautions and will ensure slaughter is carried out in accordance with legal requirements. While the NGO's advocate argued that temporary slaughterhouses cannot be permitted, the judges said under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, the municipal commissioner has the power to permit slaughter at any place for the purpose of festival.

The state's advocate said it is taking preventive measures, including deployment of sufficient police force, to prevent a law and order situation. The court was informed that 39 CCTVs have been installed at sensitive places and also near temples and mosques.
