BHIM Payments App recorded a 301% jump in transaction volumes in FY26, as more users turned to the platform for everyday payments ranging from groceries and dining to online shopping and bill payments, according to NPCI BHIM Services Limited.
The company said monthly transaction volumes on the app increased from 5.93 crore in April 2025 to 21.6 crore in March 2026, more than tripling over the financial year. In April 2026, the app recorded 22.49 crore transactions worth ₹26,040 crore.
West Bengal emerged as one of the faster-growing markets for the app, with peer-to-merchant (P2M) payments accounting for 71% of transactions in the state during FY26.
Groceries made up the largest share of merchant transactions at 22.5%, followed by food outlets and restaurants at 18.7%. Quick commerce accounted for 6.4% of transactions, while e-commerce and fuel stations contributed 3.9% and 3.4%, respectively.
Lalitha Nataraj said the growth reflects increasing trust in digital payments platforms that are designed to be simple and accessible.
“In West Bengal, we are seeing this adoption take shape across a wide range of everyday use cases, from groceries and dining to commuting and online purchases, highlighting how digital payments are becoming an integral part of daily life,” she said.
The company also said it is seeing increasing adoption of newer payment features such as RuPay Credit Card on UPI.
To drive adoption among a wider user base, the app currently supports more than 15 regional languages, including Bengali, and is optimised for low-connectivity environments aimed at rural and semi-urban users.
Some of the newer features on the app include UPI Circle, which allows users to authorise trusted contacts to make payments within a set limit, Family Mode for tracking shared expenses, split bill payments, spending analytics, UPI Lite auto top-up, prepaid mobile recharge and forex booking services.
NBSL said reward-led incentives and merchant partnerships are also helping improve engagement on the platform.
