BGT's singing nurse Beth Porch says coronavirus battle made her feel 'helpless'

Britain's Got Talent 's singing nurse Beth Porch says she felt "helpless" as she battled coronavirus.

Beth, who moved BGT viewers and judges to tears with her original song on Saturday night, had to have two weeks off from from the children's ward when she contracted coronavirus.

She says she was lucky to only get a mild version of the COVID-19 virus, but felt helpless when she couldn't work on the frontline.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly on Good Morning Britain, she said: "I was really fortunate I just had mild symptoms.

"It was just flu like symptoms, bit of a temperature and I felt a bit rubbish at times, but didn't need hospitalisation."

She added: "After about two weeks of feeling unwell I felt able to come back to the ward and it was such a joy to come back.

"I felt so helpless when I was ill so was great to be able to help again.

"As a nurse I feel I should always be doing something to help."

Beth had just come off a nightshift when she spoke to Lorraine and was at work on Saturday night when her audition aired on the show.

She was allowed to take a quick break to watch the moment she appeared on the ITV show.

She said: "It was so bizarre, everyone kept saying it's sad that you have to be at work when the show is airing but it was great because I was with my colleagues and where it all began."

Beth earned a reputation as 'the singing nurse' after she offered to give a young boy on the ward a guitar lesson when she was a student nurse.

Other parents who heard her singing and playing asked her to perform for their kids and she soon found herself going round the ward putting on impromptu concerts.

Beth's song You Taught Me What Love Is, has been released as a charity single to raise funds for the NHS and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

She's being kept from the number one spot by Captain Tom Moore, but said she's happy to accept that.

Beth says she dreamed of being a musician for a long time, but won't give up her job as a nurse for anything.

She said: "I wanted to be a musician for a long time in my teenage years.

"I took time out to pursue it but didn't feel like the right timing."

She added: "I'm in my dream job at the minute but being a musician has been a dream too, but I'll never give up my registration pin for anything, I've worked too hard for it."

* Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV
