BGT fans convinced they're hallucinating as Teletubbies audition for show

Hosts Declan Donnelly and Ant McPartlin appeared just as confused as Britain's Got Talent viewers this evening as the Teletubbies auditioned for the ITV show.

As the quartet marched onto the stage, Dec laughed as he held up his hands and said in bemusement: "I can't believe they're auditioning for Britain's Got Talent!"

Ant laughed as he echoed Dec's confusion, asking: "What's going on?!"

Welcoming them on stage, Amanda Holden said: "I don't think we need to ask who you are! But who are you?"

After each of them announced their names - Tinky Winky, Dipsy, La La and Po - they were asked whether they reckoned their performance would be suitable for the Royal Variety.

"Yeah," La La replied confidently.

The Teletubbies went on to dance to their own song, which then merged into Beyonce's Single Ladies, Disco Inferno and Best Song Ever before confetti rained down onto the stage.

Afterwards, Amanda gushed that the audition was "fabulous" as it was "like meeting Beyonce ".

"Or Mickey Mouse," Simon Cowell pointed out.

Ant and Dec were left asking what was going on (ITV)

"I'm thrilled that you've come on the show," Amanda said. "I think you've still got it and I actually think the royal family would love you."

"And I feel quite emotional because we had a lot of success together," Simon said, referring to himself working with the children's characters during the 90s on a single. "We're back together... this is a big moment."

"Simon, you want a big hug?" Tinky Winky asked the judge, prompting him to get out of his chair and get in stage.

And viewers were a little confused, taking to Twitter to comment.

One tweeted: "Wtf am I watching."

While another commented: "just tuned into #BGT for the first time in 5 years. What the f*** is happening."

A third questioned: "The Teletubbies are on #bgt?? *immediately checks if someone has added alcohol to my Pepsi!"

Another asked: "Are the Teletubbies dancing to Beyoncé on #BGT or am I having a fever dream?"

*Britain's Got Talent returns on Monday at 8pm on ITV
