Ofcom has ruled that the dresses chosen by Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon for the Britain’s Got Talent final “appropriately covered” the judges, despite almost 300 complaints from viewers unhappy with the amount of flesh on show.

Both judges opted for revealing outfits with plunging necklines, which left viewers complaining about the amount of cleavage for a family show that begins before the 9pm watershed.

Media regulator Ofcom received 89 complaints about the dresses, while about 200 people voiced their concern to ITV.

Ofcom assessed the complaints and has decided there does not need to be a formal investigation into whether the show was in breach of broadcasting regulations.

“We assessed a number of complaints about the clothing worn by two female judges being unsuitable before the watershed, but won’t be taking the matter forward for investigation,” said an Ofcom spokesman. “In our view, the dresses appropriately covered the judges and they were not portrayed in a sexualised way.”
