BGT 2020's first finalist confirmed as comedian Steve Royle chosen by judges for final

Britain's Got Talent 2020 has its first finalist, as comedian Steve Royle made it through thanks to the judges.

Steve was chosen during the first semi-final of the series, which was pre-recorded, while magicians James and Dylan Piper and singer Fayth Ifil are yet to learn their show fate amid a public vote.

The show was meant to air in May live, but the shows were cancelled and moved due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As the first episode came to an end, Steve was the victorious act sent straight through to the final by judges Amanda Holden, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Ashley Banjo, who is replacing an injured Simon Cowell.

As Ant and Dec confirmed the news, he said it was "crazy and unbelievable" that he had made it through.

The way of voting is a major change to the usual way of doing things, and there is still one act from Saturday's show set to be a finalist.

Hosts Ant and Dec were quick to confirm at the start of the show another big change to the series, this time to the format.

Normally, the eight acts per show will perform with a top three decided by the public vote.

Then, the act with the highest votes would automatically go through to the live final.

Following that, the four judges would choose out of the final two to secure another finalist.

Now it's a little different though, as the show is pre-recorded so the normal vote isn't doable that same evening.

Instead, the judges send an act through, before those watching at home can vote and decide on the second act to save.

On Saturday night, the judges decided on a top three out of the eight acts who performed.

Once Ant and Dec revealed the top three, it was down to each judge to name an act to go through - while the other two would be picked from in the public vote.

In the final three were James and Dylan, Steve and Fayth.

Alesha, Ashley and David all voted to send Steve straight through, with Amanda admitting she too would have picked him.

Britain's Got Talent airs Saturdays at 8pm on ITV.
