Beyonce's dad opens up on GMB about the moment he told his family he had breast cancer

Beyonce's dad today opened about the moment he told his family that he had breast cancer.

Matthew Knowles, who is also dad to Solange, confirmed last month that he'd been diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year.

He revealed his family have a history of breast cancer and prostate cancer and he also has the genetic BRCA2 mutation.

The music manager has spoken out after undergoing a mastectomy, which he is hoping will lead to a full recovery.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain earlier today, Matthew admitted that it was ‘tough’ to tell Beyonce, Solange and the rest of his family about his diagnosis.

He told Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway: "It was tough to have to tell them that.

“But genetically, it’s all my family members - I had to talk to my sister, I had to talk to my nieces, my grandson, everyone is affected by this."

Speaking of his superstar daughters’ support, Matthew said their love for him has helped him throughout his ordeal.

“My daughters love their father obviously and I love my daughters,” he said. “The love and the care and family, it’s always good to have family in these tough times.

"But my kids know how tough their dad is, and what a fighter I am. I’m also very cautious - it’s a lifestyle change. I stopped drinking, I’m working out more, losing weight. All of those things.

"Also, it’s a mental thing, every time you have a cold or anything, you immediately think, ‘Boy it’s cancer coming back’. It’s a psychological thing you have to work on and I’m getting there with that."

Matthew said by speaking about his experience he is hoping to raise awareness of the disease - particularly in men - and how important early detection is.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
