Beyonce has referred to her seven-year-old daughter Blue Ivy as a “cultural icon” amid a trademark dispute with a wedding planner.
According to Sky News, the Lemonade artist’s attempts to trademark “Blue Ivy Carter” have been opposed by Wendy Morales, who claims she was using the name first.
Lawyers acting on behalf of Beyonce are now asking the US Patent and Trademark Office to dismiss the opposition.
They argue Blue Ivy, Beyonce’s eldest child with husband Jay-Z, is a “cultural icon” who has been “described as a ‘mini style star’ and has been celebrated for her ‘fashion moments’. Her life and activities are followed extensively by the media and the public”.
The legal documents say that, by contrast, Ms Morales runs a “small business” with just a “handful of employees”, a small online presence and poorly subscribed social media accounts.
“The Opposition, which claims that consumers are likely to be confused between a boutique wedding event planning business and Blue Ivy Carter, the daughter of two of the most famous performers in the world, is frivolous and should be refused in its entirety,” the court documents add.
Beyonce recently collaborated with her daughter on her Lion Kingsoundtrack album The Gift, which made Blue Ivy the youngest female artist in history to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Blue Ivy frequently appears with her parents at prestigious events, including the 2019 Grammy Awards and the world premiere of The Lion King.
Beyonce and Jay-Z are also parents to two-year-old twins Rumi and Sir Carter.
