Bexleyheath: Girl, 9, killed in bus collision which left brother hospitalised as driver arrested

A nine-year-old girl has died after being hit by a bus in south London last week.

A bus struck two siblings on Bexleyheath’s Watling Street, near the junction with Halcot Avenue, on August 3 at roughly 9am, leaving one girl seriously injured.

Detectives have now said the nine-year-old girl died of her injuries in hospital on Monday. Her brother, a five-year-old boy, was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

Issuing an update on Wednesday, Met officers said the male driver of the bus was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving and drug-driving.

He has been bailed to a date in early November pending further enquiries. Detectives did not give the route number of the bus concerned or say if passengers were on the bus at the time of the collision.

Officers said the two children had been with a family member at the time of the collision. The victim’s family has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Any witnesses to the collision who are yet to speak with police are now being asked to call 101 quoting reference CAD 2309/03AUG.

Detectives from the Met’s specialist Roads and Transport Policing Command are leading the investigation.
