Bewley's may 'reopen' Grafton Street cafe in Dublin

Bewley's may be able to reopen its Grafton Street cafe in Dublin, it has been reported.

Many were left mourning after the beloved eatery announced it was closing with the loss of 110 jobs in May.

But now Bewley's bosses have said in a letter to Ronan Group that the restaurant had raised enough funds to clear the arrears on its rent, legal costs and interest owed according to The Irish Times.

The annual rent for the city centre location is almost €1.5 million, Dublin Live reports.

In June a note on the Bewley's website read the cafe was going to be closed "until further notice".

But the same note also said "we hope to see each of you again when this has passed", and there was optimism from inside landlords Ronan Group Real Estate, owned by developer Johnny Ronan, that the cafe could still reopen.

The historic cafe first opened in 1927 and is Dublin's best known coffee shop, serving more than 600,000 customers every year.

The closure announcement in May was a massive blow to the city's hospitality sector as the Covid-19 lockdown's effects on business began to take hold.

The closure was blamed on the lockdown, as well as the added costs of the new social distancing measures needed once cafes and restaurants reopen.

Another reason given was the €1.5 million rent for the historic Bewley's building, which houses a number of tea rooms, a Harry Clarke stained glass window, ten open fireplaces, and a distinctive mosaic tiled front entrance.
