Beware of fake HMRC letters and emails offering refunds due to pandemic

Brits are being urgently warned over fake HMRC coronavirus letters and emails offering "tax refunds".

The fraudsters claim the UK Government have set up a tax refund programme for dealing with coronavirus pandemic - which is not true.

The phishing email reads: "The Government has taken urgent steps to list coronavirus as a notifiable disease in law."

It adds that a refund programme has been set up in response and says: "Based on your National Insurance contributions you are eligible to get a tax refund of £128.34."

But, in order to receive this, you are prompted to click a link under the guise you can "claim your national insurance refund".

This is in fact a malicious link which aims to access your private details and potentially steal money.

A warning about the scam read: "HMRC REFUND SCAM! There are fake HMRC letters & emails going around issuing refunds due to COVID-19.

"DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS Please retweet to raise awareness."
