Bevis Mugabi's towering Motherwell winner lauded as skipper Gallagher hails Ugandan Prince

Bevis Mugabi has come in for high praise after his towering header against Ross County ended Motherwell's long wait for a win last night.

The 25-year-old Ugandan international produced an astonishing leap of 2.5m to rise above the Staggies defence and power home a header from Jake Carroll's corner kick in the 2-1 triumph in Dingwall.

It ended a 13-game winless run and gave gaffer Graham Alexander his first taste of victory at the helm.

And Mugabi's display garnered rave reviews from pundits on Sportscene last night, as well as Motherwell captain Declan Gallagher, who praised the 'Ugandan Prince'.

Analysing footage on Sportscene, former Scotland women's boss Shelley Kerr and ex- St Mirren striker Chris Iwelumo were in awe of the defender's goal.

Kerr said: "It was absolutely magnificent.

"Look at the height he was up. The height of the crossbar is 2.44m, so he's up higher than the crossbar.

"We are debating whether [Ross County] can do better defensively, but that is magnificent, what a header, great timing of the run, brilliant delivery and absolutely brilliant."

And Iwelumo added: "It's a fantastic header to get as high as he did, but to get that accuracy as well. It's great."

Following the game, Gallagher tweeted his delight at the result and singled out Mugabi for praise.

And Mugabi himself was a happy man in Dingwall as he spoke to the Steelmen's media team at the final whistle - receiving a congratulatory slap from boss Alexander in the process.

It was Mugabi's second goal of the season after netting in a 3-0 win over Aberdeen in September and lifted the Steelmen up to 10th in the table.

And it certainly helped cheer up the Fir Park faithful, who hadn't seen their side win since October 31 away to Livingston.

Motherwell are idle this weekend, but face another midweek fixture next when they host Dundee United on Wednesday, February 3.
