Beverley Knight and David Baddiel lead stars paying tribute to NHS on anniversary

A host of celebrities, including Beverley Knight and David Baddiel, have taken part in a moving tribute to the NHS on its 73rd anniversary.

The video message was organised by Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, Labour MP for Tooting and A&E doctor.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Dr Allin-Khan told her followers: "It's the NHS's 73rd birthday! I called around a few friendly faces and asked them to share their NHS stories. We wanted to show our appreciation to all the staff.

"Thanks to everyone who took part and thanks to NHS staff for everything they do."

The three minute long video sees a series of famous faces paying thanks to the health service and recalling the times the institution has helped them or family members in need.

"From the cradle to the grave, the NHS is here for us throughout the entirety of our lives," singer and theatre star Beverley Knight begins as she kicks-off the tribute.

"The staff always go above and beyond to put patients first," continues Three Lions hitmaker David Baddiel.

Beverley then told how the NHS saved her mum last year when she was 'desperately ill' with suspected Covid-19.

Dragon's Den star Deborah Meaden then explains how the NHS came to her aid when she broke her wrist this month and also saved the life of her nephew when his heart stopped.

"The NHS helped save my step-dad when he had cancer," adds Ru Paul's Drag Race star Divina De Campo.

The video ends with the celebs encouraging people to say a huge thank you to the NHS.

"To everyone who makes us proud to put our trust in it," dedicates David Baddiel as the clip comes to an end.

Ahead of the anniversary today, the Queen awarded the NHS the George Cross, the UK's highest award for gallantry and heroism.

It's only the third time the honour has been presented to a collective body as opposed to an individual since it was established by the Queen's father in 1940.

In a handwritten letter, the Queen said: "It is with great pleasure, on behalf of a grateful nation, that I award the George Cross to the National Health Services of the United Kingdom.

"This award recognises all NHS staff, past and present, across all disciplines and all four nations. Over more than seven decades, and especially in recent times, you have supported the people of our country with courage, compassion and dedication, demonstrating the highest standards of public service.

"You have our enduring thanks and heartfelt appreciation. Elizabeth R.”

The Duke of Cambridge will mark the anniversary by attending a service at St Paul's Cathedral on Monday before hosting a celebration at Buckingham palace.

The Duchess had been due to attend but was forced to pull out after coming into contact with someone who later tested positive with Covid.

Kate, 39, has had both her jabs and tested negative four times herself in the past week.
