He said: "Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever.

"I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don't think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again."

She was an early pioneer in television comedy, starring in The Golden Girls, who went on to have an 80-year-long career in Hollywood.

Betty held the Guinness World Record for ' Longest TV Career for an Entertainer', having started working in television in 1939.

Across her impressive career she won eight Emmy Awards (21 nominations), three Screen Actors Guild Awards and was a 1985 Television Hall of Fame inductee.

She was was set to celebrate her 100th birthday on January 17, 2022.
