Betty Buckley Reflects On Challenges And Joys Of Eight Is Enough

Betty Buckley replaced Diana Hyland on Eight is Enough due to her passing.

Eight is Enough, the beloved TV show that aired from 1977 to 1981, holds a special place in the hearts of millions of Americans. However, for star Betty Buckley, who played Abby Abbott on the series, the experience was not without its challenges.

Buckley, known for her role in the horror film Carrie, joined the show as a replacement for Diana Hyland, who tragically passed away after filming a few episodes due to breast cancer. The transition was not easy for Buckley, who faced difficulties negotiating her role with the production company Lorimar.

Despite initial promises of a modern and dynamic character, Buckley found herself relegated to the kitchen in a muumuu, a far cry from the envisioned role. Restrictions on her wardrobe, such as being forbidden from wearing jeans, added to the frustrations she faced on set.

Even creative suggestions, like a proposed food fight inspired by Penny Marshall, were met with resistance from the network due to concerns about Abby's role model status. The show's emphasis on portraying Abby as a mature figure, in line with the original character, limited Buckley's creative input.

Despite these challenges, Buckley cherished her time on Eight is Enough, considering it a 'dream job' that allowed her to grow as an actress. She maintained close relationships with her castmates and fondly remembered working with her onscreen stepson, Adam Rich.

Reflecting on her experience, Buckley expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the show and acknowledged the impact it had on her career. Her latest role in the horror film Imaginary showcases her versatility as an actress, portraying a nosy neighbor in a chilling tale of terror.
