Bettors suffered a horrible bad beat after last-second Temple TD was canceled out

Remember that touchdown the Kansas City Chiefs scored in 2017 in which they ran back a meaningless last-second touchdown after a bunch of Washington Redskins laterals?

This play from Thursday night’s Temple and East Carolina game — in which the lights went out during the contest — is sort of like that … except even wilder.

Unfortunately for bettors who took Temple as minus-12 favorites, it resulted in a terrible bad beat.

The Owls were up 27-17 on the Pirates, and ECU ran one final play as time was expiring. But when there was a lateral attempt, a Temple defender scooped it up and RAN IT ALL THE WAY BACK! The ESPN booth clearly knew the spread and mentioned how the play affected it.

But then? Officials said the play was whistled dead because the ECU receiver’s forward progress had been stopped before the failed lateral. Game over, and the Pirates covered thanks to a meaningless score with 29 seconds left. Oh no!!
