Betting suspended on Sean O'Rourke's RTE Radio One replacement after big gamble on Claire Byrne

Paddy Power suspended betting on Sean O'Rourke's RTE Radio One replacement after a surge in punts on presenter Claire Byrne.

Radio legend O'Rourke will hang up his mic on May 8th, with Sarah McInerney taking the hotseat in the interim until a permanent host is found.

McInerney had been the frontrunner for the job ahead of Miriam O'Callaghan, although a sudden gamble on Claire Byrne has forced the popular bookmaker to suspend its market.

The experienced host began at odds of 4/1 last week but was backed into 6/4 and then 5/6 on Thursday before the market was suspended.

A spokesman for Paddy Power said: “It looked like the job would be Sarah McInerney’s to lose following last week’s confirmation that she would be the next bum on Sean’s swivel chair.

“But her stint in the hotseat could be short-lived, as a number of well-placed punters have been backing Claire Byrne overnight, prompting us to suspend betting on the market.

"They seem convinced that she is next in line for O’Rourke’s primetime throne."
