‘Better safe than sorry’: Woman hops out of moving Uber after noticing her driver twirling a knife in the front seat

A woman said she was “blessed to make it out alive” after an unsettling experience with her Uber driver.

In a minute-long TikTok that received over 210,500 views, Xkhat (@xkhatkhu) records her Uber driver engaging in strange behavior. In the front seat, he is twirling a pocket knife between his hands.

Xkhat writes in an on-screen caption, “POV my uber driver before I hopped out on the highway to escape.”

‘This just made my heart sink’

In the comments section, viewers were shocked and appalled by the behavior.

One wrote, “Please please tell me you got all his info and reported him to both uber and the police. He looks like men my true crime shows speak about…I’m glad you’re ok & you trusted your gut!!!!! Even I had a bad feeling through the phone.”

A second said, “Well that definitely means danger. Glad you were paying attention and made it out safe this definitely should be shared to everyone because this can definitely happen. Everyone stay safe!”

However, one said the behavior might’ve been innocent. They wrote, “Better safe than sorry. But I use my knife like a fidget toy ALOT without noticing, almost took it to traffic court on accident once, so idk where I really stand on this one without a full story.”

Another said that even still, the behavior was inappropriate, writing, “That’s inappropriate on his part. I don’t care if he’s innocently fidgeting. NO ONE should take this lightly under any circumstance.”

This isn’t the first time a woman has gone viral for jumping out of an Uber

In another TikTok the Mary Sue covered, a man recounts the story of a woman who jumped out of her Uber. Apparently, she noticed mist coming out of the center console and the driver covering his mouth. He reports that she took a small breath as she exited and started feeling woozy “within like five seconds.” He says she believes she would have been trafficked had she not gotten out.

What should I do if my Uber driver makes me feel unsafe?

On a page dispensing safety tips for riders, Uber encourages customers to trust their intuition. It states, “Trust your instincts and use your best judgment when requesting a ride with Uber. If you ever feel that you’re in an urgent situation, you can call 911 by using the Emergency Button located in your app. Anytime you call emergency services from the Uber app, the app provides you with your real-time location and trip details that you can share with the dispatcher.” It adds that you can cancel a ride at any time.
