'Better late than never' - Tottenham fans relieved as Daniel Levy makes u-turn on furlough call

Tottenham will be paying all their staff 100% of their wages for April and May.

That is the latest development from the club, after they received widespread criticism from the footballing world for admitting they would be using the Government's furlough scheme.

With the coronavirus pandemic having a huge impact on football and the whole world, Spurs decided to cut wages for 550 non-playing members of staff and placing around 40% of those on the Government's furlough scheme.

And that decision from the club came just days after profits of £68.8million for the 2018/19 campaign were announced.

The decision to furlough staff was met with criticism from the club's own fanbase, with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust calling on chairman Daniel Levy to "do the right thing".

And Levy and the club have listened to their detractors and overturned the decision.

In a statement on the club's official website, Levy said: "The criticism the club has received over the last week has been felt all the more keenly because of our track record of good works and our huge sense of responsibility to care for those that rely on us, particularly locally.

“It was never our intent, as custodians, to do anything other than put measures in place to protect jobs whilst the Club sought to continue to operate in a self-sufficient manner during uncertain times.

“We regret any concern caused during an anxious time and hope the work our supporters will see us doing in the coming weeks, as our stadium takes on a whole new purpose, will make them proud of their club.”

And the supporters are relieved the club has come to the right conclusion eventually.

The common consensus among the fanbase was that the supporters clearly still had a voice, given how the move to furlough staff has come after widespread criticism.
