Better Call Saul season 5 delayed until 2020

The next season of Better Call Saul has been delayed.

AMC President Sarah Barnett has revealed that the Breaking Bad spin-off will not return for its fifth season this year, and will instead come back in 2020.

“It’s driven by talent needs, which we would not override if it would result in a worse show," Barnett, speaking Vulture, said of the decision.

Quizzed further about Better Call Saul having a limited run compared to the ongoing The Walking Dead, Barnett referenced Breaking Bad, saying: "We know clearly the end was already written before the beginning began.

"The writers, they have a very particular, very clear sense of the arc of their show."

As with Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul has been lauded by critics. The show's creators previously said they are aiming for the same number of episodes as Breaking Bad (62 to Better Call Saul's current 40). Showrunner Peter Gould said: "We are talking about roughly the same number of episodes as Breaking Bad

"Though, if at the beginning of this you had told me we were going to do this many episodes about Walter White’s comedy sidekick lawyer I would have said you were crazy! The show has turned into a very different animal from frankly what I ever would have pictured when we got started."

The delay could be linked to the forthcoming Breaking Bad film, which will see Aaron Paul return as the character Jesse Pinkman. The show's creator, Vince Gilligan, is reportedly writing and directing.
