BetMcLean League Cup final confirmed for Sunday date

Irish League history will be made this season when a major final is held on a Sunday for the first time.

It has been confirmed that the BetMcLean League Cup decider between Cliftonville and Coleraine will be played on Sunday, March 13 at Windsor Park (3pm kick-off).

It is a landmark move by the NI Football League who are looking to "maximise the potential' of the competition.

It has also bee confirmed that the final will be broadcast live across the UK and Ireland on Sky Sports.

NIFL Chief Executive Gerard Lawlor said: "This announcement marks our ambitions to maximise the potential of our League Cup competition and make this game one of the showpiece events of the football calendar.

“I have set the challenge to our staff to make this the biggest final in NIFL’s history for the benefit of the competing clubs, our sponsor and most importantly the fans.

“I am aware this is the first time a major domestic final will be played on a Sunday in Northern Ireland, but we have to continually evolve as a league and look to what has worked for other major sporting events and learn from their successes.

“We will aim to provide affordable and attractive ticket pricing for the final that both rewards the loyalty of long serving supporters but opens the door for new fans and families to enjoy the superb product of live Irish League football”.

Information on tickets, match day arrangements and hospitality packages will be announced in the New Year.

It is a historic move from local football legislators who have traditionally avoided playing fixtures on a Sunday.

A Sunday ban on club football in Northern Ireland had been in place until 2008 before it was removed.

Article 36.b of the Irish FA's Football Regulations now allows matches to be played on Sundays provided both teams and the organising competition agree, but there has never been a significant appetite from clubs.

The IFA has already moved to fulfilling fixtures on Sunday, an inevitable result of UEFA and FIFA scheduling shifts in recent years.

But next week's annual Boxing Day fixtures are being played on Monday, December 27.
