Betfred Cup round-up: Albion Rovers win EPIC penalty shootout, Airdrie win and Clyde lose

Albion Rovers won an epic penalty shootout to earn a bonus point in the Betfred Cup clash with Stranraer on a night of mixed results for Lanarkshire sides.

THIRTY spot kicks were taken at Stair Park as Connor McManus missed Stranraer's 15th effort and Aron Lynas won the shootout for Rovers.

The 15-14 success earned them a bonus point after a 2-2 draw over 90 minutes.

Sonkur broke the deadlock at Stair Park after 18 minutes when he stabbed the ball home from close range, but Rovers were behind for long as they levelled on the half hour mark. Matthew Aitken's pass found Sam Jamieson and he rifled the ball past Blues keeper Greg Fleming.

And on the stroke of half-time Aitken's mazy run set up Gregor Fotheringham to send Rovers in front going into the interval.

However, the hosts restored parity in 58 minutes when Ruari Paton arrived at the back post to earn a draw and take the game to penalties.

Meanwhile, Airdrie earned their first win when they beat League Two Stenhousemuir 2-0 to claim their first points in Group H, while Clyde suffered defeat to Falkirk in Group E.

Ian Murray's men enjoyed a comfortable win at Ochilview as two second half strikes sunk the Warriors.

The Diamonds opened the scoring just moments into the second half when Paul McKay fired home and two minutes from time substitute Craig Thomson sealed the win when he rifled the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Meanwhile, Clyde lost 2-1 away to League One rivals Falkirk.

Aidan Keena gave the Bairns the breakthrough after 13 minutes with a strike after he latched on to Ben Hall's through ball.

Clyde equalised just four minutes later when David Goodwillie fired a low strike into the net after Craig Howie's ball over the top.

A penalty for the hosts put them back in front moments into the second half, with Callum Morrison converting after Robbie Leitch was brought down in the box by Scott Rumsby.

All the Lanarkshire clubs will now turn their focus towards the big league kick-off on Saturday.

In League One Airdrie host Peterhead and Clyde welcome Partick Thostle to Broadwood, while Albion Rovers start their League Two campaign at Cliftonhill against Stenhousemuir.
