Betfred Cup fears as SPFL boss Neil Doncaster outlines 'particular challenges' facing competition

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster has outlined the "particular challenges" facing next season's Betfred Cup.

The competition's group stages were scheduled to get underway in July, however Doncaster admits this is going to be tough for part-time clubs.

With Scottish football unlikely to return until at least August, and fans not expected to return to stadiums until even later, there are serious concerns over how lower league clubs are going to be able to field teams given the cost of playing behind closed doors.

However, despite the current lockdown restrictions, the SPFL boss says he's still planning for the tournament to "be carried out in the usual way".

He says the league body is working with the government and sponsor partners, such as Betfred, get things going again.

He told Sky Sports News: "Clearly the Betfred Cup, which is due to commence in the middle of July with a group stage, that is a particular challenge, particularly around the involvement of part-time clubs.

"A number of part-time clubs are unable to be up and running because they can’t accommodate playing behind closed doors and that’s going to be a particular challenge for the League Cup.

"We’ll work with our other partners for that competition, including Betfred, to try and find a way to do that as well.

"I think we need to absolutely open minded about any eventuality in the coming season. People see season 2019/20 as the challenging one but I rather suspect that in time to come it will be 2020/21 that will be more challenging.

"That applies to the Scottish Cup, the Betfred Cup, the league and the Challenge Cup as well.

"We plan for all these competitions to be carried out in the usual way but we know that there are significant challenges ahead for football returning to normality.

"We’re working through those challenges with the government and with our sponsor partners."
