In a rare occurrence, United States President Donald Trump is standing his ground and delivering on his promises. After weeks of threatening the Democrats with mass layoffs, the Trump administration on Friday sent circulars for the firing of approximately 4000 federal workers, as per reports.
Sources, which include people directly affected by the layoffs, suggest that the departments most affected by the firings are Commerce, Homeland Security and Treasury, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, and Housing and Urban Development.
If Trump’s prior threats regarding this matter hold true, it is likely that many of those being let go are individuals who lean Democratic or have Democratic support. He supported this speculation on Friday by reiterating that he would be firing “a lot” of “Democrat oriented” people. Answering a question regarding his federal workforce reduction plans from a journalist during a press conference at the Oval Office on Friday, he said:
“It will be Democrat-oriented, because we figure they started this thing, so they should be Democrat-oriented. It’ll be a lot, and we’ll announce the numbers over the next couple of days. But it’ll be a lot of people all because of the Democrats. Many of them will be fired.”
Following Trump’s move, the Democrats did not stay mum and used their voice to call Trump out on his unacceptable behaviour. Several of Trump’s critics took to social media, especially X, to note their thoughts on the matter. They urged people to recognise that Trump’s behaviour resembled that of a dictator who makes threats to achieve his goals. In this case, he threatened to fire employees who leaned Democratic because he refused to agree to the inclusion of essential healthcare-related clauses in a government funding bill. California Governor Gavin Newsom, a vocal critic of Trump and his administration, called him “reckless” and his leadership “cruel” while noting that his actions had “pushed families to the brink.”
The general public also spoke against Trump’s behaviour, with several calling out the people who voted for Trump. One person mentioned:
“Hey MAGA people. Did u vote for Trump? Are u a federal worker who had been fired by Trump? Bet ur sorry u voted for him now. DONALD DOESN’T CARE ABOUT U!”
Others also echoed a similar sentiment as they continued to predict Trump’s next move.
