‘Best we could hope for’ - Sunderland supporters optimistic despite devastating Ross Stewart injury news

Sunderland supporters were relieved at the latest Ross Stewart update despite the news decimating his season. The Scotland international is ruled out for the remainder of the campaign after being stretchered off against Fulham.

A collision with Issa Diop just 13 minutes into the FA Cup clash forced Tony Mowbray to withdraw his top goalscorer. Stewart was sidelined for 15 games earlier this season with a hamstring problem and has been dealt another injury blow.

With the Black Cats just one point off the play-off places, the news is a major setback for any promotion push. Joe Gelhardt arrived from Leeds United last week and fans have urged the youngster to “step up” in Stewart’s place.

Others have ordered Stadium of Lights chiefs to bolster Mowbray’s attacking options to ensure the best possible chance of Premier League promotion. Former loanee Ellis Simms, recalled by Everton on New Year's Eve, is linked with a potential return.

However, the overwhelming emotion is relief as Stewart faced an even longer spell on the sidelines. His Achilles injury is understood to keep him out until pre-season.

A contract until June means the Scotland international may have played his final game in red-and-white stripes. This is how Sunderland fans reacted to the news on social media.

@RickieNRory: "Gelhardt is going to have to step up massively with this happening!"

@samblakey_: "Honestly thought it was going to be a lot worse. Chin up Ross, you’ll smash it next season."

@anthony_waterson: "Probably the best we could have hoped for. Get well soon Rossco."

@lewygsafc: "Bit of positive news! Pity he's gonna be out for the season though. Speedy recovery Ross."

@dp202: "This sounds horrific but given the circumstances it’s probably the best we could have hoped for. Now hand him two crutches, a pen, and a three year deal please."

@WiseMenSayPod: "It's bad news but could have been so much worse - just hope the rehab goes well and he's back stronger next season. Big 12 hours now for the club."
