Best ways to farm Leaves – Octopath Traveler 0 money guide

Money makes the world go ‘round, and the same can be said for Leaves in the land of Orsterra. Whether you’re looking to buy a new sword in Grandport or you want to pay off the local barkeep to improve your reputation, you’ll need plenty of Leaves in Octopath Traveler 0. Luckily, there are a few ways to make quick money in the latest JRPG.

You receive Leaves after every battle, and the easiest way to get more cash is to keep battling enemies. You can also sell items at shops or find them in chests, but there are also other ways to increase your rewards or establish a steady income at Wishvale. Here are the best ways to get Leaves in Octopath Traveler 0.

Bring your Merchants to all your battles

Of all your companions, the Merchants Ludo and Tressa offer the most direct way of getting extra Leaves in battle. Tressa’s Collect skill steals Leaves from a foe, while her support skill Extra Leaves increases the amount of money you receive after combat. Similarly, Ludo’s skill Negotiation causes the target to provide additional experience points and Leaves at the end of battle—but you won’t be able to stack this effect with Tressa's.

Between the two, Tressa is my go-to for swiping money from foes. I've gotten thousands of Leaves from a single enemy thanks to the Rippletide merchant, and that's not even counting the money I received at the end of the battle. Some enemies will cough up more than others, but it's worth using the skill in each encounter nonetheless.

Thieves can also make you some money, though they won't steal it directly. Both Therion and Heidne have the Steal Mastery, which takes an item from an enemy in combat. These items can then be sold at shops, though you aren't guaranteed to make a significant sum from each item you get. It's not a direct line of cash, but if you're desperate, it's a means worth pursuing.

Entreat or contend with NPCs for their high-priced items

In Octopath Traveler 0, you’re given a number of Path Actions like Entreat and Contend, where you take items from NPCs. If you want to optimize the amount of money you get in your journey, be sure to speak to everyone you come across and take a quick peek in their inventory.

Some item descriptions will say they fetch a “high” price. These are the most valuable items in the game, and you can get a pretty penny for them. You can also purchase items from NPCs, haggle for a lower price, and then turn around and sell them at a shop for a profit. I haven't found great success with this process, and it can be quite lengthy, so I'd stick with items you can get for free.

Sell items only at Ludo’s shop

Each NPC at Wishvale offers some bonus effect with their Resident Skill. Ludo's Savvy Seller boon marginally raises the selling price of items when you're doing business at the Wishvale shop. If you want to make the most money you can, you should take advantage of this effect and only sell your items at Wishvale. Yes, that means you'll have to constantly travel back to the town. But it's worth it, considering Ludo will hook you up with a 10-percent increase in sale price.

Invite residents with Leaf Gift effects

Some residents offer an effect called Leaf Gift, which regularly provides you with a small amount of cash. These NPCs can be hard to come by, but the following characters all grant this effect:

  • Heidne - Recruited after completing Heidne and the Man-Eating Miser side quest
  • Goodwin - Recruited on Shipwreck Island
  • Responsible Syndicate Member - Valore bar
  • Brigand Boss - Cragspear

Now, don't get me wrong; the amount they'll give you is only a couple hundred Leaves at a time. But if you stock up on the number of residents with this effect, it can quickly add up. And hey, it's free money! Who doesn't love that?

When you get to later parts of Octopath Traveler 0, you'll come across characters who have the Leaf Supply or Patron effect, which are similar to Leaf Gift but offer a much larger amount of Leaves.

  • Former Working Dancer (Leaf Supply) - Sunshade tavern
  • Generous Noble (Leaf Supply) - Flamesgrace chapel
  • Ambitious Investor (Patron) - Grandport tavern

Don't forget to sell old weapons and armor

This one might seem like a given, but it's easy to forget about old equipment. When you go to the sell menu in a shop, only the useless junk appears at the top—not your equipment, healing items, or Soulstones. Similarly, the cheaper the item, the further down the list it will appear. And by the time you've reached the late game, your inventory list is sure to be long.

Take some time every now and again to switch out all your companions' gear and sell what you won't be using anymore. You'll be surprised at just how much money you can make from cleaning out your closet.
