Frank Lampard has sprung a huge surprise with his Chelsea team selection against Liverpool.
The Premier League rivals - who claimed the Europa League and Champions League respectively last season - clash in Istanbul tonight and the UEFA Cup is at stake for the winner.
And the Blues head coach has named N'Golo Kante in his starting line-up.
To say the Frenchman has endured a disjointed pre-season would be putting it lightly.
The same injury which almost caused him to miss the Europa League final win over Arsenal resulted in him being reduced to one substitute appearance in the build up to the new campaign.
Kante was a second half introduction in the heavy 4-0 loss at Manchester United on Sunday and was considered doubtful to face the Reds today following comments made by Lampard.
"He has a small injury which we are concerned about and we will have to decide with him on that this evening," Lampard told reporters yesterday.
"Can he play or not.?
"He’s had a very broken pre-season.
But Kante has been deemed fit enough to take part from the start against the Champions League holders.
