Best supermarket for prosecco this Christmas named after blind taste test

A bargain bottle of prosecco from the high street has been named the best of the rest for Christmas - and it currently costs just £7.

Morrisons' The Best Prosecco, has taken the top spot in this year's Good Housekeeping taste test - with experts crowning it 2018's number one bottle for festivities.

With a score of 89/100, it beat 38 brands, including Aldi, Lidl, and Harvey Nichols' Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore, £16, which came in second place.

Out of 12 high street brands, the retailer's £3.75 own-brand milled wine also took the top spot, followed by a £6 bottle of Taste the Difference mulled wine at Sainsbury's.

Overall, however, Tesco was the supermarket with the most wins this year, securing the top spot in the meat stuffing, gluten-free mince pies, veggie mains, and Christmas ham categories.

German discounter Lidl also won three categories in Good Housekeeping's 20th Christmas taste test.

The consumer experts blind-tested 383 products, across a range of 20 categories - from mince pies to Yorkshire puddings.

In frozen turkeys and crowns, Marks & Spencer came in first place, with its 'Turkey Breast Crown with Pork, Sage, and Onion Stuffing,' for £14.40 gaining a score of 84/100.

"Testers loved the pork, sage and onion stuffing seasoned with black pepper and parsley, which enhanced the smoky flavour of the turkey meat," Good Housekeeping said.

Roast Potatoes are a family favourite, and this year, 'McCains Roasts,' £3.10 for 1.4kg, came out on top, with a score of 85/100.

"Testers loved the fantastic crunch and deep flavour of these spuds, which were also praised for its beef dripping coating," it said.

For the sweet-toothed, Good Housekeeping also tested a range of Christmas treats for the holiday season.

In the traditional mince pies category, Baking Agent, an online home baking range, came out as number one.

Tweleve frozen "Baking Agent Mini Bake at Home Mince Pies,", sold through Ocado.com scored 90/100.

There were joint winners in the traditional Christmas Puddings category, - with both Iceland and Lidl scoring 79/100.

The 'Iceland Luxury 12 Month Matured Christmas Pudding,' £4 for 400g was applauded for its heady festive spices, and almond and pecan pieces, whilst the ‘Lidl Deluxe 24 Month Matured Christmas Pudding,’ £11.99 for 907g, was a hit "due to its savoury treacle undertones with testers calling it a light, well-balanced pudding".

Angela Trofymova, at Good Housekeeping said: "Every year, we’re seeing the supermarkets and brands step up their game when it comes to Christmas – which is great for consumers!

"We’ve tested and tasted great products from a wide range of retailers and brands from Aldi and Lidl to EAT, Ocado and M&S, proving that regardless of price, more and more thought is being given to the taste, dietary requirements and versatility of all products being sold this Christmas.

"We hope our test helps make it easier for consumers to choose from the extremely crowded market out there at this busy time of year."
