Best silver trousers for radiating space-age chic

We may still be in the early days of 2024, but that doesn’t mean our trend radars haven’t started to whir. No doubt a reaction to the glum January forecast which prompts us all to turn to our social feeds in search of some sartorial joy, the dazzling glare of metallic trousers is illuminating the high streets once again.

The epitome of dopamine dressing, silver trousers are a bold statement that honours fashion’s relationship with space. The garment carries far more gravitas than merely existing as a squeaky trend championed by Scandinavian influencers and Zara shoppers. They hold a rich, high-fashion history that positions them as one of the most reactive items of clothing to ever exist.

Rewind the clock to the aesthetically medlied 1960s. Alongside currently popular items such as Mary Janes, patchwork jeans and all-things crochet, metallics emerged as one of the defining trends of the era. Cold War antics such as the Space Race spurred on a widespread fascination with outer space which left an indelible mark on the fashion of the time.

A further reaction to the successful 1969 Apollo 11 mission, a crop of emerging designers zoned in on space-age style. Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne and André Courrèges created intergalactic mood boards saturated with metallic garments spanning clinking paillette shift dresses to silver trousers, Jackie-O glasses, white go-go boots and helmets.

The Sixties also oversaw a period of scientific and technological advancement in fashion. New, modern materials such as PVC, lamé and vinyl were popularised and neatly slotted into fashion’s captivation with alien aesthetics and youthful Mod culture.

A gleaming symbol of optimism (most fitting for a cost-of-living crisis), it was only time before silver trousers took off again. Adored by fashion darlings such as Elle McPherson, Dua Lipa, Elsa Hosk and Sarah Lysander, silver trousers, be they in jean or leather form, began punctuating social feeds and runways one shimmering step at a time.

Metallics have been reimagined by fashion houses including Versace, Giorgio Armani and Gucci throughout the years, particularly during the sartorially streamlined Nineties. Rabanne, Courrèges and Chanel continue to incorporate silver into their collections, paying homage to the trademark motif pioneered by their founders.

Fashion may be fleeting, but it will always hold a candle for futurism. Add a touch of timelessness to your transitional wardrobe with a pair of silver trousers and catapult your style into a new stratosphere.
