Best quilted jackets for autumnal warmth and flair

There’s a certain inevitability to the return of the quilted jacket each autumn. Somewhere between a country weekend staple and a streetwear icon, it’s survived more revivals than most outerwear could withstand – largely because it never really went away.

From the neat diamond stitched Barbours spotted on the school run to padded iterations fresh off the Paris runways, quilting manages that rare feat of being both deeply traditional and perennially adaptable.

This season, the quilt is less about equestrian chic and more about versatility. Labels from Free People to Nobody’s Child are offering lightweight, packable options that layer as easily under a wool coat as they do over a chunky knit. The stand-out, fresh element of this season’s quilted outerwear – however – appears to be reversibility. Two jackets in one? Don’t mind if we do.

At the same time, designers are experimenting with proportion: oversized silhouettes, exaggerated collars and elongated hems give the humble quilt a sculptural edge. Even the heritage versions, in muted khaki or navy, have taken on a fresh relevance.

What makes the quilt endure is its balance of form and function. The stitched baffles aren’t just decorative, but they lock in warmth without adding bulk, making the jacket a reliable choice for those unpredictable in-between days when a wool coat feels stifling, but a blazer isn’t quite enough.

If my own wardrobe is anything to go by, one quilted number is rarely enough. A reversible black version has become my go-to for the office, while a looser, khaki style is ideal for weekends.

This is perhaps the true secret of the quilted jacket: its chameleon-like ability to suit almost any context, from city pavements to muddy fields. With the right one, you’re never overdressed, never underprepared, and never short of an extra pocket.
