'Best programme for ages': Twitter reacts to Question Time in Nottingham

Question Time arrived in Nottingham last night - and it's fair to say it was a pretty lively edition of the BBC show.

Host Fiona Bruce had to appeal on a number of occasions for people not to shout out, as discussions on Brexit and Donald Trump highlighted the divisions clearly evident in the audience.

The show was broadcast from the Great Hall of the Trent Building at the University of Nottingham's main campus.

On the panel were:

  • Vince Cable, MP for Twickenham and leader of the Liberal Democrats;
  • Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion and the only Green Party politician to be elected to Westminster;
  • Victoria Atkins, MP for Louth and Horncastle and the Government's Crime Minister and Minister for Women;
  • Jon Ashworth, MP for Leicester South and Labour shadow secretary for health and social care;
  • Actor and Brexiteer John Rhys-Davies.

Kicking off with a question about climate change and the impact of 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, the programme became more heated following a question about the recent launches of the Brexit Party and Change UK: The Independent Group.

John Rhys-Davies was applauded when he said that he had "never seen such a level of anger" in the country, and when he told the other panellists that "you have betrayed democracy".

Victoria Atkins was laughed at when she said: "We serve at your pleasure and you lend us your votes."

Host Fiona Bruce asked her, "Why do you think that's getting that kind of reaction?", and the MP replied, "This reaction is really worrying for all of us."

This was greeted with a shout of 'rubbish!' from the audience, which was repeated when she went on to say that the Prime Ministers withdrawal agreement was a "good deal".

That led Fiona Bruce to say to the audience: "I know people feel passionately, but we can still also be polite."

But things took another turn when Caroline Lucas accused Nigel Farage of "whipping up a lot of hatred and racism", leading to a mixture of boos and applause from the audience. Vince Cable was also booed for saying a People's Vote was now needed.

It led the host to say it was "far and away" the liveliest audience she had had.

And that wasn't the end of it - there was still the issue of the Trump visit to be discussed.

Again, comments were met with boos and applause in equal measure, leading Fiona Bruce to intervene once more.

On social media, many people thought the Nottingham audience hadn't come across too well.

However, others took to Twitter to defend Nottingham, whether they were saying that the opinions expressed were simply reflecting a wider mood, or that in fact the views weren't representative.

There was also praise for the audience's reaction to some of the panellist's answers.

And thankfully, there was still room for a bit of humour in the responses.

To apply to be a member of the Question Time audience, people have to fill out a questionnaire before the selection is made by the BBC.

The questions asked include your occupation, how you voted at the last General Election, how you voted in the EU Referendum, whether you are a member of a political party, and whether you have ever been 'politically active in any way e.g held office, attended a political meeting, distributed leaflets, campaigned, stood as a candidate, worked for a political party, supported a campaign group'.
