Best pizza cutters for the perfect slice, tried and tested

A food initially devised for Italy’s poor and working classes, if any foodstuff can claim to have successfully achieved global domination, it must surely be pizza.

The Naples-born flatbread-with-toppings has ignited the global appetite and taken over practically every pocket of the planet. In the UK, our love for the rudimentary combo of bread, tomato sauce and cheese has seen it become one of the most popular takeaway choices for millions, usually delivered piping hot as a weekend treat.

Yet whether you order in, throw a supermarket version into the oven, or make it yourself from scratch (dough and all), we've all struggled over slicing it up neatly at one point or another.

Some believe the popular circular shape is to blame, and point to Rome's pizza hawkers as an example of efficiency, who slice rectangular pies up into squares in a neat grid formation, while others blame blunt blades for failing to cut neatly.

A sharp blade is key for getting through toppings, cheese and a crispy blade in one pass. While a good kitchen knife should do the trick, they're best saved for other food prep jobs, especially when there are so many great pizza cutters out there to choose from.

Typically consisting of a circular blade with a handle, these cutters make slicing through your deep pan or thin-crust pizza a breeze, rolling across the dish in one instead of haphazardly sawing at it and wrecking the composition of toppings.

In terms of technique, take aim and swoop down confidently on your pizza, which you will have ideally set on a wooden chopping board to protect the blade from bluntness and roll firmly from crust to crust. In a perfect world, one pass should cut through all the layers, but two is acceptable if that’s what is required for neat cuts. It’s not just a one-trick pony either; the versatile tool can also be used to cut pies, quiches, tarts and more.

Pizza cutters make great gifts for lovers of the dish, as well as anyone moving into a new home. We’ve rounded up the coolest and most stylish below to help make shopping for a new one easier.
